During the month of May 2023, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3827 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.3 and 5.02 and depths between 0 and 144 miles. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.4 that occurred on May 13 at 12:19:50 AKDT (May 13, 20:19:50 UTC), 6 miles E of Uliaga Island in the depth of 65 miles.

The most notable seismic event in May was a magnitude 4.6 earthquake that occurred on May 13th at 7:53PM AKDT 43 miles West of Anchorage in the Cook Inlet. It was widely felt in the South of Alaska and Kenai Peninsula. 300 DYFI reports were submitted.

Other than that we reported 40 suspected quarry blasts (M0.3-2.0), 72 ice quakes (M0.8-1.7), and 208 seismic events associated with volcanic activity (M0.6-3.9). The seismic activity at volcanoes in May  was lower than it was in April and March 2023.

We continue to monitor our "hot spots"  within Anchorage, offshore Kodiak, Simeonof-Chignik, Kaktovik aftershock zones as well as crustal seismic activity in the Brooks Range, Seward Peninsula and Bering Strait. 

Thirteen earthquakes were reported as felt in May.
