WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR OCTOBER 23, 2023 TO OCTOBER 29, 2023

During the week of October 23, 2023, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 1025 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.3 that occurred on October 27 at 19:44:10 AKST (October 28, 03:44:10 UTC), 36 miles SW of Klukwan.

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake that occurred 33 miles SW of Klukwan on October 27, 2023 19:01:49 AKDT, that was about 40 minutes before the main shock as above. These events were reported as felt widely in Juneau and surrounding areas. There were over 100 aftershocks recorded for the event.

Other significant events include a magnitude 4.0 that occurred 26 miles E of Kantishna on October 27, 2023 17:00:04 AKDT, and a magnitude 3.7 that occurred 79 miles E of Chalkyitsik on October 22, 2023 17:49:00 AKDT. In addition, we recorded high activity NW of Unalaska with over 50 earthquakes ranging in magnitude between 1.4 and 2.8 in this week.

There were 83 icequakes recorded near E of Wrangell-St. Elias National park and Preserve, the Prince William Sound region, Bering Glacier, Icy Bay and Yakutat Bay. 

7 events were reported as felt.
