WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JANUARY 15, 2024 TO JANUARY 21, 2024

During the week of January 15, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 1129 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.3 that occurred on January 19 at 12:34:35 AKST (January 19, 21:34:35 UTC), 1 miles NE of Salcha. This event was followed by approximately 400 aftershocks in the first 3 days and reported as felt throughout the interior and south-central Alaska.

Some of the noteworthy events include a magnitude 4.6 earthquake that occurred 37 miles S of Chignik on January 14, 2024 23:16:16 AKST, this event was reported as felt in Chignik and Sand Point, a magnitude 4.5 earthquake that occurred 41 miles NE of Brevig Mission on January 15, 2024 19:53:09 AKST, this event was followed by 45 aftershocks and was reported as felt in Nome, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake that occurred 39 miles N of Hayes Volcano on January 14, 2024 15:18:52 AKST, this event was followed by 19 aftershocks, and a magnitude 3.5 earthquake that occurred 26 miles NE of Icy Bay on January 20, 2024 13:04:12 AKST.

During this week we also recorded increased activity in the south western part of the Brooks range near Kobuk with 18 events ranging from magnitude 3.4-1.0.

There were 26 icequakes recorded near the Prince William Sound region and Valdez.

7 events were reported as felt.
