Port Wells is about 13 miles ENE of Whittier, near Port Wells and Pigot Bay in eastern Prince William Sound. The station was installed in 1974 and modernized in 2010 as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act-funded upgrade to the Advanced National Seismic System. Crushing snow loads at PWL have forced us to reinforce the fiberglass hut and power the station entirely with non-rechargeable batteries, as solar panels cannot survive a single winter. Located in the Chugach National Forest, PWL is generously hosted by our partners at the USDA Forest Service.
