D24K was installed in 2016 as part of the temporary USArray project and integrated in 2020 into the permanent Alaska network as part of the National Science Foundation-sponsored Alaska Geophysics Arctic Observing Network project. Because of its location on the North Slope, D24K operates in extreme conditions, including temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius. Early spring can be challenging; in the past the field crew had to snowshoe to the site pulling sleds. This station is near the Sagavanirktok ("Sag") River. D24K is generously hosted by our partners at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources and the North Slope Borough.
