E22K was installed in 2016 as part of the temporary USArray project and integrated in 2020 into the permanent Alaska network as part of the National Science Foundation-sponsored Alaska Geophysics Arctic Observing Network project. The installation team noted this was a difficult site to drill because of quartzite/meta-conglomerate that wore down the drill bit. A soil temperature probe wasn't installed because the team couldn't find a place with more than a few inches of soil covering solid rock. The station is surrounded by terrain ranging from wet, tussocky tundra to lichen-covered boulder fields. A GNSS instrument was installed in 2022. E22K is generously hosted by our partners at the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation (ASRC), the North Slope Borough, and Nunamiut Corporation.
