H22K is northwest of the community of Rampart, on an open ridge within the sparsely wooded boreal forest of the Yukon-Tanana Uplands. The borehole extends down into the permafrost layer (as of 2019). Wildlife can be a challenge: this site has suffered bear damage multiple times. H22K was acquired in 2019 under dedicated support from our partners at the U.S. Geological Survey to strengthen earthquake monitoring across southern Alaska. The site was originally installed as part of the USArray project. H22K is generously hosted by our partners at the Bureau of Land Management.
