K20K sits on an open hillside within boreal forest. It is in the foothills of the Kuskokwim Mountains, near the Kuskokwim River. The field team described working on the terrain: "We dug a trench through the broken limestone and fully buried the conduit, stacking rocks near the exposed sections at the ends." K20K was acquired in 2019 under dedicated support from our partners at the U.S. Geological Survey to strengthen earthquake monitoring across southern Alaska. The site was originally installed as part of the USArray project. K20K is generously hosted by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
