What is a Tsunami Ready* community?




 

TsunamiReady is a National Weather Service designation for a local government, tribe, or facility that has completed the following preparedness steps:

  1. Hazard Mapping: Define local tsunami hazard zones, create clear evacuation maps, and post route signs.
  2. Public Outreach: Provide ongoing education for residents, businesses, and schools located in danger zones.
  3. Emergency Operations: Set up a 24-hour warning point and an active emergency operations center.
  4. Communication Systems: Maintain multiple reliable ways to receive official tsunami warnings and alert the public quickly.
  5. Action Planning: Create a formal operations plan for tsunamis and run annual response exercises.
