WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JANUARY 20, 2025 TO JANUARY 26, 2025
During the week of January 20, 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 607 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.6 that occurred on January 26 at 13:39:14 AKST (January 26, 22:39:14 UTC), 44 miles SE of the Okmok Caldera. This event was reported as felt in Unalaska, Nikolski, and Akutan.
There were two additional events reported as felt this week. First on January 20 at 02:21:00 AKST, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported as felt in the Ester community. Then on January 21 at 02:55:06 AKST, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred 72 miles SE of the Okmok caldera. This event occurred just 28 miles SE of the magnitude 5.6 earthquake discussed above, and has caused 35 aftershocks the largest of which being a magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
Volcanic activity around Mount Spur has picked up this week with 13 recorded volcanic events the largest of which being a magnitude 2.
In addition to tectonic activity, 7 ice quakes and 4 mining blasts were also recorded.
