MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR MARCH 2025

During the month of March 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3109 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.8 and 6.2 and depths between 0 and 227 km.The largest earthquake was magnitude 6.2 that occurred on March 21 at 06:53:42 AKDT (March 21, 14:53:42 UTC), 55 miles SE of Adak in Andreanof islands.  This event was part of a vigorous  earthquakes swarm, which started developing  on March 19th. This sequence, throughout the end of March, produced about 350 earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 1.8 to 6.2. Adak residents said they felt shaking.

Brooks Range was  seismically active in March, producing three earthquakes of magnitudes 4.0-4.8 from Kaktovik in the east to  Point Hope in the west as well as the Denali Fault:  a magnitude of 4.1 earthquake was recorded there.

We also reported 74 seismic events  that were other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these, 21 were suspected quarry blasts (magnitudes M=1.1-1.54), most of which were at Fort Knox and Usibelli mines; 36 glacial events (magnitudes M=1.3-2.8), primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, and Yakutat Bay areas, and 17 seismic events (M=1.2-1.8) associated with volcanic activity primarily at Mt Spurr.

There were 15 earthquakes reported as felt (M3.2-6.2). The event with the largest number Did You Fill It responses , 402, was a M3.2 earthquake 8 miles NE of Fairbanks at Fox, on March 30th, at 1:05 PM.
