MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR MAY 2025
During the month of May 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 1796 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 1.26 and 5.2 and depths between 0 and 234 km. There were 16 events with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.2. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.2 that occurred on May 22 at 18:30:41 AKDT (May 23, 02:30:41 UTC), 86 miles SE of Akutan. All earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and greater were recorded along the subduction zone.
We reported 29 seismic sources other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these, 3 were suspected quarry blasts (magnitudes M=1.5-2.4), most of which were at Fort Knox and some at the Usibelli mines, 17 glacial events (magnitudes M=1.4-1.7), primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay and Yakutat Bay, and 9 quakes as events associated with volcanic activity (M=1.6-2.7), primarily at Mt Spurr.
There were 12 earthquakes reported as felt in May. The event with the largest number of DYFI (Did you Feel It) responses, 45, was a M3.2 on May 12th at 01:28AM AKDT, 7 miles NE of Chugiak. This earthquake was felt throughout Anchorage area.https://earthquake.alaska.edu/event/02562ggsg0
