During the month of August 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3034 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.5 and 5.6 and depths between 0 and 263 km. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.6 that occurred on August 1 at 02:03:15 AKDT (August 1, 10:03:15 UTC), 91 miles S of Sand Point.There were four other earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 4.0. They were located along the subduction zone.

We reported seismic sources that were other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these, 26 were suspected quarry blasts (magnitudes M=0.8-1.5), most of which were located in the vicinity of either Fort Knox or Usibelli mines in Interior Alaska. The reported events included 73 icequakes (magnitudes M=0.8-2.04), primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, and Yakutat Bay areas. We also reported 19 quakes associated with volcanic activity (M=0.9-2.6), most of which were located at  Katmai volcanic group and Mt Spurr.  One landslide and three events of unknown origin were also located in the interior of Alaska.

Eight events were reported as felt in August. The largest number of DYFI (Did You Feel It) responses, 240, came from the M3.6 earthquake that occurred August 16 at 7:34AM AKDT 9 miles E of Anchorage.
