WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR MAY 27, 2024 TO JUNE 2, 2024

During the week of May 27, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 765 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 4.9 that occurred on June 2 at 06:02:43 AKDT (June 2, 14:02:43 UTC), 168 miles SE of Old Crow in the Yukon Territory. 

The only event reported as felt was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake that occurred on June 1 at 04:40:23 AKDT, in the Cook Inlet 19 miles W of Anchor Point. This event was reported as felt throughout the Kenai Peninsula.  

Other notable events include:

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake that occurred on May 26 at 16:12:37 AKDT, 127 miles SE of Perryville. This event was not reported as felt, but it did generate 19 aftershocks over the next three days, ranging in magnitude from 2.4 to 3.9. 

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake that occurred on May 26 at 19:52:30 AKDT, 30 miles E of Kantishna. This event generated 23 aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 0.8 to 3.1.

There was increased activity this week in the Icy Bay region, with 14 events ranging in magnitude from 1.2 to 3.5. The largest event, a magnitude 3.5, occurred on June 1 at 02:49:07 AKDT, 33 miles NE of Icy Bay.

There were 15 icequakes recorded this week, primarily in the Prince William Sound and Yakutat Bay areas. Additionally, there were 9 quarry blasts recorded in Fairbanks area, and 1 recorded in the Healy area.
