WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JULY 1, 2024 TO JULY 7, 2024

During the week of July 1, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 724 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 4.6 that occurred on July 2 at 16:20:36 AKDT (July 3, 00:20:36 UTC), 47 miles S of Chagulak Island. This event was not reported as felt, but was followed by 6 aftershocks over the course of the week, ranging in magnitude from 2.3 to 4.2. These events are aftershocks of the magnitude 6 Chagulak earthquake that occurred on May 19, 2024.

There was a high amount of glacial activity E of Juneau on July 6 and July 7, with 6 icequakes recorded ranging in magnitude from 2.0-2.9. This is typical seasonal glacier behavior at Wright Glacier, with more icequake activity observed as seasonal glacial melting occurs. For more information regarding this seasonal activity see the following AEC news story: What Is Causing Seismicity Near Mt. Ogden in Southeast Alaska?

High activity continues E of Atka, with 27 events occurring throughout the week ranging in magnitude from 1.4 to 3.1.

High activity also continues in the area approximately 40 miles NE of Arctic Village, with 10 events ranging in magnitude from 0.8 to 2.3.

Overall, there were 14 icequakes recorded this week, with events occurring in Yakutat and the Prince William Sound regions in addition to the aforementioned events near Juneau.

There were no events reported as felt this week.
