L20K perches on the top of St. John's Hill, near the Farewell airstrip. Located near the northwestern flank of the Alaska Range, this station is situated on a gently sloping moraine from an old glacier. On one visit, the field team commented that the "Site was completely snow free and the land around the hill was also snow free. Helicopter pilot commented that the area is strangely dry and that the section of Iditarod trail that is nearby is almost always snow free even in heavy snow years." The site was acquired in 2019 under dedicated support from our partners at the U.S. Geological Survey to strengthen earthquake monitoring across southern Alaska. The site was originally installed as part of the USArray project. L20K is generously hosted by our partners at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
