A21K is our northernmost site, located near Utqiagvik (the community formerly called Barrow). The site stands near a weather balloon release tower. Situated on tundra on Point Barrow, this site lies near the confluence of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas. The Arctic coast can be subject to strong storms. During one site visit, the field team noted "A large snow and wind storm had occurred the day before arrival and the wind continued during the site visit. 30-40 knot winds during station visit, ambient air temp 0 deg F, -25 deg F with wind chill." This site was acquired by the Alaska Earthquake Center at the conclusion of the USArray project as part of our effort to provide statewide coverage. A21K is generously hosted by several partners: the North Slope Borough, Argonne National Laboratory, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Bureau of Land Management (National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska). The Department of Energy lab co-located on the site provides an internet connection. Photo courtesy of Array Network Facility.
