2015 Pribilof Island Swarm

Earthquakes near the Pribilof Islands are a rare occurrence. The central Bering Sea is virtually aseismic. The plots below show seismicity in the region of the January 2015 sequence between 2002 and 2019.

Graph showing between 2003 and 2019, five earthquakes over magnitude 5 and other smaller earthquakes occurred in a narrow timeframe. Magnitudes ranged from 2.8 to 5.4.

The Alaska Earthquake Center located more than 100 earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.8 and 5.4 during the short-lived and vigorous sequence in late-January and February of 2015. There were five earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 5.

The lack of station coverage in the region makes reliably locating smaller earthquakes in the sequence very difficult.

In February 2015, nearly 100 earthquakes occurred, with five earthquakes over magnitude 5. Earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 5.4.
