2023 M7.2 Sand Point Earthquake

 

At 10:53 PM AKDT on July 15th, based off of the size, depth, and location of the earthquake, the National Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula from Kennedy Entrance (40 miles SW of Homer) to Unimak Pass (80 miles NE of Unalaska).
 
Due to an update in earthquake magnitude, the warning was downgraded to an advisory at 11:47 PM AKDT for the areas of Chignik Bay through to Unimak Pass. Eventually the advisory was cancelled at 12:47 AM AKDT early on Sunday, July 16th.

 

A 0.5 foot tsunami wave was measured at the King Cove and Sand Point tide gauges, with no damage reported to any coastal communities.
