MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2023

During the month of February 2023, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3523 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.4 that occurred on February 20 at 20:35:25 AKST (February 21, 05:35:25 UTC), 27 miles S of Old Harbor. All earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4.0 were located along the subduction zone.

The most notable event of M 5.0 occurred  36 miles W of Tyonek on February 2, at 5:48 AM AKST. It was widely felt in south-central communities, and 468 felt reports were submitted.

Also we've been seeing a lot of seismic  activity at volcanoes in February. We recorded  volcano-tectonic earthquakes at Trident (Katmai group), Tanaga, Takawangha, Makushin, and Aniakchak volcanoes, total number was 229.   More information on seismicity at volcanoes you can get from Alaska Volcano Observatory web site https://www.avo.alaska.edu

Other than that we recorded 32 suspected quarry blasts, 56 glacial events, and 6 events of unknown origin.

Ten earthquakes were reported as felt in February.
