2016 M7.1 Iniskin Earthquake

A damaging magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred at 1:30am Sunday January 24, 2016, 60 miles west of Homer. The depth and location of this earthquake indicate that it occurred inside the subducting Pacific Plate. The rupture was caused by extension of the plate as it is pulled into the mantle by its own weight.

This ground motion visualization shows how the earthquake energy (i.e. shaking) radiated across the state. Each circle represents a seismic station. You can see them turn dark as the shaking propagates across the state.
