During the month of August 2023, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3962 events within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.3 and 5.6 and depths between 0 and 250 km.  The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.6 that occurred on August 3 at 11:33:50 AKDT (August 3, 19:33:50 UTC), 53 miles SW of Sand Point.There were 9 other earthquakes with magnitudes 4.5.-5.0. They  occurred along the subduction zone except  the M4.8 crustal earthquake 92  miles NW of Haines Junction  and M4.5 in Chukchi Sea. In Chukchi Sea, there were located also 12 smaller events with magnitudes ranging between 2.5 and 3.5. 

We also reported  seismic sources that were classified as other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these, 40 were suspected quarry blasts all of which were located in the vicinity of either Fort Knox or Usibelli mines in Interior Alaska, 127 icequakes  primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, Yakutat Bay and Pothole glacier at Mt Spurr areas. We located 147 quakes associated with volcanic activity.  The seismic activity was observed mostly at the Katmai volcanic group.

12 earthquakes were reported as being felt in August.
