During the month of December 2022, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 4334 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 6.3 that occurred on December 14 at 09:40:26 AKST (December 14, 18:40:26 UTC), 18 miles W of Amchitka.

On December 11, at 11:09 PM AKST an earthquake of M4.7 occurred 39 miles E of Seldovia. This earthquake was reported felt in multiple Kenai Peninsula communities. 238 felt reports were submitted for this event.

On December 7, at 7:21 AM AKST, an earthquake of M 4.4 was recorded 29 miles S of Ester in Central Alaska. It was felt in Fairbanks and surrounding communities, 84 felt reports were submitted.

Other earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4.0 occurred along the subduction zone.

We also recorded 124 volcano-tectonic earthquakes, 1-4 miles deep,  associated with Katmai, 37 suspected quarry blasts, 71 ice quakes, and 5 events of unknown origin. 

We continue to monitor seismic activity within Anchorage, offshore Kodiak, Simeonof-Chignik aftershock zones as well as crustal seismic activity in the Brooks Range, Seward Peninsula and Bering Strait.
