MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JUNE 2024

During the month of June 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3221 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.7 and 5.0 and depths between 0 and 250 km. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.0 that occurred on June 29 at 03:10:33 AKDT (June 29, 11:10:33 UTC), 13 miles NE of Atka Pass in Andreanof Islands.

Other notable events in June were a M4.9 earthquake 174 miles NW of Dowson city that occurred on June 2nd in the morning and followed by some aftershocks,   a magnitude 4.4 event 19 miles W of Anchor Point on June 1st, at 4:40am that was reported as felt across Kenai Peninsula communities, and a magnitude 4.4 earthquake 32 miles SW of Kantishna on June 8th, at 2:08am that was reported as felt across Interior Alaska.

We also reported  seismic sources that were other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these, 34 were suspected quarry blasts (magnitudes M=0.7-1.6), most of which were located in the vicinity of either Fort Knox or Usibelli mines in Interior Alaska, 34 icequakes (magnitudes M=0.9-1.8), primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, and Yakutat Bay areas and at Wright Glacier,  and 31 seismic events associated with volcanic activity (M=0.8-2.0), primarily at the Katmai volcano group.

Eight earthquakes were reported as felt.
