MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR APRIL 2025
During the month of April 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 1795 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 1.2 and 5.5 and depths between 0 and 244 km. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.5 that occurred on April 2 at 08:26:32 AKDT (April 2, 16:26:32 UTC), 21 miles SW of Attu. There were 16 events with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.5.
The most notable event was a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that shook the Alaska Peninsula and surrounding area on April 1, 04:04 UTC (March 31, 8:04PM AKDT) followed by about 40 aftershocks the next day. It was a crustal event that occurred on the depth of 7 miles, and it was related to the Bruin Bay Fault. We reported 34 seismic sources that were other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these, there were 19 glacial events (M1.2-17) primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, and Yakutat Bay areas and 15 quakes of M1.2-2.2 associated with volcanic activity primarily at Mt. Spurr.
Fourteen earthquakes were reported felt in April. The event with the largest number of DYFI (Did you Feel It) responses, 1891, was a M4.7 on April 29, at 00:03 AM AKDT, 18miles N of Cooper Landing. This event was felt throughout southcentral Alaska and the Kenai Peninsula https://earthquake.alaska.edu/event/0255gxqhup.
