MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JULY 2024
During the month of July 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3410 earthquakes within the state with magnitudes ranging between 0.7 and 6.0 and depths between 0 and 268 km The largest earthquake was magnitude 6.0 that occurred on July 18 at 19:13:46 AKDT (July 19, 03:13:46 UTC), 41 miles S of Chagulak Island. There were 15 other earthquakes of magnitude 4.3-5.4.
We reported 84 seismic events other than regional tectonic earthquakes. Of these 25 were suspected quarry blasts (magnitudes M=0.9-1.5), most of which were located in the vicinity of either Fort Knox or Usibelli mines in Interior Alaska. The reported events included 31 icequakes (magnitudes M=0.8-2.9), primarily located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, Yakutat Bay areas, and at Wright Glacier (Mt. Ogden). We also recorded 26 events associated with volcanic activity and 2 landslides.
Eight earthquake were reported as felt in July. The largest number of Did You Feel It responses, 122, came from earthquake of M3.8 in the Kenai Peninsula, 36 miles E from Homer, on July 11th at 21:26 pm of AKDT.
