WEEKLY SEISMICITY REPORT FOR AUGUST 19, 2024 TO AUGUST 25, 2024
During the week of August 19, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported a total of 707 earthquakes across the state. The largest event was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake that occurred on August 22 at 01:52:55 AKDT (August 22, 09:52:55 UTC), located 134 miles south of Atka. It was not reported as felt.
On August 21 at 18:40:21 AKDT, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake was felt in Valdez and Anchorage, with 35 reports of shaking.
The previously active swarm of earthquakes just east of Atka Island has mostly subsided, with only 5 earthquakes recorded this week. Seismic activity south of Unalaska has also dropped significantly.
Eighteen icequakes were detected across southern Alaska this week. Additionally, 5 mining blasts were observed at the Fort Knox mine complex, north of Fairbanks.
In total, two events were reported as felt.
