WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 30, 2024 TO OCTOBER 6, 2024

During the week of September 30, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 784 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.4 that occurred on October 5 at 04:50:41 AKST (October 5, 12:50:41 UTC), 53 miles SE of Okmok Caldera.

There were three felt events this week, all located SE of the Okmok Caldera. The first event was a magnitude 4.6 earthquake that occurred on October 5 at 04:50:24 AKDT. Then 17 seconds later at 04:50:24 AKDT, a second earthquake of magnitude 5.4 was reported as felt. A third magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported as felt at 00:34:11 on October 6. Each of these events were felt throughout Akutan and Unalaska. A total of 30 earthquakes were recorded in this region this week.

Swarm activity continued South of Adak as the earthquake center recorded 51 earthquakes in the region. The largest of which was a magnitude 4.5 earthquake on October 3. 

Seismic activity SE of Selawik has picked up this week. 20 earthquakes were recorded with largest being a magnitude 2.

Similarly, seismic activity is increasing south of Kaktovik with 14 recorded earthquakes this week, the largest of which being a magnitude 3.1 earthquake.

12 icequakes were detected across southern Alaska this week. Additionally, four mining blasts were observed at the Fort Knox mine complex, north of Fairbanks.
