WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 20, 2023 TO FEBRUARY 26, 2023
During the week of February 20, 2023, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 774 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.4 that occurred on February 20 at 20:35:25 AKST (February 21, 05:35:25 UTC), 27 miles S of Old Harbor.This event was reported as felt in the Kodiak region.
Other significant events include a magnitude 4.9 earthquake that occurred 60 miles SE of King Cove on February 24 at 02:50:45 AKST and a magnitude 4.7 earthquake that occurred 32 miles SE of Port Graham on February 24 at 13:00:44 AKST. These events were reported as felt in the Alaska Peninsula and South Central Alaska respectively.
The number of earthquakes under the Takawangha Volcano in central Aleutians are significantly reduced this week and only 6 events are recorded ranging from 1.8-2.6. This volcano is currently at a yellow alert level ADVISORY as per the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Please see https://avo.alaska.edu/activity/Takawangha.php for more information.
There were 12 Icequakes recorded in the Prince William Sound and Mt. Wrangell region.
