MONTH SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JUNE 2023

During the month of June 2023, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 3632 earthquakes with the magnitudes ranging between 0.4 and 5.7, and depths between 0 and 289 km. There were 20 earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4.0. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.7 that occurred on June 8 at 12:31:44 AKDT (June 8, 20:31:44 UTC), 11 miles S of Kiska Island (Rat Islands). This earthquake was followed by aftershocks, and 70 of them were located.

The most notable event was a M4.8 earthquake 9 miles E of Central on June 11th at 6:32 am AKDT. It was reported as felt in Central, Fairbanks, North Pole, Delta, and Tok. 

Another notable  earthquake of M4.3 was located 19 miles S of White Mountains on June 15th at 11:23 pm AKDT. It was reported as felt in Nome and surrounding villages.

In June 2023, we also reported 220 earthquakes associated with volcanic activity (M=0.6-3.6), 57 ice quakes (magnitudes M=0.9-2.6) located in the Prince William Sound, Icy Bay, Yakutat Bay, and Ogden/Wright glacier, and 44 suspected quarry blasts, which were located in the vicinity of either Fort Knox or Usibelli mines.

21 earthquakes were reported as felt.
