WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JANUARY 22, 2024 TO JANUARY 28, 2024

During the week of January 22, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 931 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 4.6 that occurred on January 24 at 06:02:52 AKST (January 24, 15:02:52 UTC), 26 miles SE of Buldir Is.

There were quite a few notable events this week. There was a M4.3 earthquake that occurred 140 miles SE of Kodiak on January 27, 2024, at 03:24:32 AKST. There were 2 M4.1 earthquakes in the interior: one 9 miles SW of Tanana on January 23 at 15:37:22 AKST with 10 aftershocks, and an event 2 miles E of Salcha on January 28 at 7:56:45 AKST. This latter event is an aftershock of the M5.3 January 19, 2024 Salcha earthquake, and was felt in Fairbanks and North Pole. A M3.5 earthquake that occurred 45 miles SW of Glennallen on January 25, 2024, at 07:09:06 AKST and was reportedly felt in Glennallen and Valdez. Last, but not least, there was a M3.1 earthquake 15 miles NW of Hatcher Pass on January 21, 2024, at 20:42:12 AKST, and was reported felt in south-central Alaska.

During this week there were 20 earthquakes recorded in south-western part of Brooks range near Kobuk ranging from magnitude 2.4-1.0.

There were 18 icequakes recorded near Prince William Sound region and Yakutak Bay.

There were 9 events reported as felt.
