WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JANUARY 8, 2024 TO JANUARY 14, 2024

During the week of January 8, 2024, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 668 earthquakes within the state. The largest earthquake was magnitude 5.9 that occurred on January 11 at 22:46:21 AKST (January 12, 07:46:21 UTC), 43 miles W of Port Alexander. This event was reported as felt widely in Juneau, Douglas, Elfin Cove and the surrounding areas.

Some of the significant events include a magnitude 3.9 earthquake that occurred 33 miles SW of Hughes on January 8, 2024 21:55:36 AKST, a magnitude 3.7 earthquake that occurred 26 miles S of Skwentna on January 11, 2024 09:25:40 AKST that was reported as felt in Anchorage.

We recorded a slight increase in activity SW of St. Lawrence Island with 5 events during this week, ranging in magnitudes between 2.8 - 3.3.

There were 23 icequakes recorded in the Prince William Sound and Yakutat Bay.
