WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR AUGUST 4, 2025 TO AUGUST 10, 2025

During the week of August 4, 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 671 earthquakes within the state. The largest event was the Tracy Arm Landslide, which occurred near South Sawyer Glacier on August 10 at 05:26:43 AKDT (August 10, 13:26:43 UTC), 56 miles SE of Douglas. This massive landslide triggered a local tsunami, which saw wave heights of at least 100 feet near Sawyer island, and stripped surrounding islands of their vegetation. The volume of this landslide is estimated to be possibly larger than 100 million cubic meters. No one was harmed in the event, either by the landslide or the subsequent tsunami. While seismic magnitude scales are not directly applicable to landslides, they can provide an estimate of the energy released. The magnitude for this event was measured at a M5.4. The largest earthquake of the week was a M4.8 that occurred on August 5 at 03:03:07 AKDT in the Aleutian Islands, 14 miles south of Bobrof Island. This event was reported as felt in Adak.

In the mainland, a M4.6 earthquake occurred on August 6 at 10:38:57 AKDT, 33 miles north of Skwentna. This event was reported as felt throughout Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley. There was also a M4.0 earthquake that occurred on August 7 at 15:45:24 AKDT 8 miles E of Ninilchik, which was felt widely throughout the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage.

The aftershocks from the M7.3 Sand Point earthquake on July 16 continued this week, although at a reduced rate from last week. There were 130 aftershocks in the area throughout the week, with magnitudes ranging from 1.7 to 3.6.

There were 4 events reported as felt this week.
