WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR JULY 14, 2025 TO JULY 20, 2025
During the week of July 14, 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 2251 earthquakes within the state. The earthquake activity this week was dominated by the Sand Point Sequence. The mainshock was a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that occurred on July 16 at 12:37:41 AKDT (July 16, 20:37:41 UTC), 53 miles S of Sand Point at a depth of 5 miles. This event was felt throughout the Alaska Peninsula and southern Alaska. There were reports of objects shaking and falling in buildings, but no major damage from this quake was reported. The seismic station closest to the earthquake source reported 14 seconds of strong shaking, followed by nearly 1.5 minutes of weak shaking.
This earthquake prompted a tsunami warning for the Alaska Peninsula, and a tsunami advisory for much of the southern coast of Alaska, although these were ultimately cancelled after no sizable tsunami was generated.
The mainshock was followed by over 1,800 aftershocks that occurred throughout the week. The largest of these aftershocks was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that occurred on July 20 at 14:28:01 AKDT, 61 miles SE of Sand Point. This event was reported as felt in King Cove, Sand Point, and Chignik Lagoon.
Other notable aftershocks included 6 earthquakes above a magnitude 5, and 21 earthquakes above a magnitude 4. Several of these earthquakes were also reported as felt locally in the Sand Point area.
Elsewhere in Alaska, notable events include a magnitude 5.4 earthquake that occurred on July 16 at 06:21:51 AKDT, 46 miles SW of Seguam Island in the Aleutians, and a magnitude 4.0 earthquake that occurred on July 19 at 11:34:44 AKDT, 9 miles NW of Tatitlek in Prince William Sound. The Prince William Sound earthquake was reported as felt in Valdez, Chugiak, Palmer, and Anchorage.
