WEEK SEISMICITY REPORT FOR DECEMBER 30, 2024 TO JANUARY 5, 2025

During the week of December 30, 2025, the Alaska Earthquake Center reported 635 earthquakes within the state. The Nikolski area in the Aleutians saw the two largest earthquakes of the week. The largest was magnitude 4.1 that occurred on December 31 at 10:47:59 AKST (December 31, 19:47:59 UTC), 14 miles SW of Nikolski. This area also recorded a magnitude 4.0 earthquake the next day on January 1 at 23:39:13 AKST, 28 miles SW of Nikolski. These events were accompanied by 7 other earthquakes in the area throughout the week, ranging in magnitude from 2.2 to 3.2. 

Increased volcanic activity at Mt. Spurr continued this week, with 19 volcanic events recorded. These ranged in depth from 3 to 10 km, and in magnitude from 1.1 to 3.2. The largest event, a magnitude 3.2 earthquake that occurred on January 2 at 05:38:42 AKST 2 miles SW of the volcano, was reported as felt in Anchorage. 

The only other felt event for this week was a magnitude 3.4 earthquake that occurred on December 29 at 22:01:30 AKST, 11 miles SE of Ninilchik. This event was reported as felt in Homer. 

There were 14 icequakes recorded in the Prince William Sound, Yakutat, and Icy Bay areas, ranging in magnitude from 1.2 to 1.7.
